Single-coil hum: All single-coil pickups act like antennas and pick up ambient electromagnetic interference (like the 60-cycle hum from electrical wiring and lights), which results in a persistent buzzing noise.
The Humbucking Principle: To cancel this noise, a second coil is used that has the opposite magnetic polarity and is wound in the opposite direction (RWRP) compared to the first coil.
Noise Cancellation: Electromagnetic interference affects both coils in an opposite manner, so when their signals are combined, the noise signals are out of phase and cancel each other out.
Signal Preservation: The vibration of the guitar string, however, induces a signal in both coils in a way that, due to the combination of reverse winding and reverse polarity, keeps the main string signal "in-phase" when the two signals are combined. The result is the full, desired guitar tone with the annoying hum significantly reduced or eliminated.
