Fender Stratocaster Hum-Canceling Middle Pickups

The middle pickup in a Stratocaster is usually reverse wound, reverse polarity (RWRP) this is done to provide hum-canceling when using a 5 way switch and while in the 2 and 4 positions. 

How it Works

Single-coil hum: All single-coil pickups act like antennas and pick up ambient electromagnetic interference (like the 60-cycle hum from electrical wiring and lights), which results in a persistent buzzing noise.

The Humbucking Principle: To cancel this noise, a second coil is used that has the opposite magnetic polarity and is wound in the opposite direction (RWRP) compared to the first coil.

Noise Cancellation: Electromagnetic interference affects both coils in an opposite manner, so when their signals are combined, the noise signals are out of phase and cancel each other out.

Signal Preservation: The vibration of the guitar string, however, induces a signal in both coils in a way that, due to the combination of reverse winding and reverse polarity, keeps the main string signal "in-phase" when the two signals are combined. The result is the full, desired guitar tone with the annoying hum significantly reduced or eliminated. 

Why you want Hum-Canceling:

Noise-free "quack" tones: The unique, bright, "quacky" sounds of the position 2 (bridge + middle) and position 4 (neck + middle) are preserved but without the typical single-coil hum, which is a major advantage, especially in studio or live settings.

Versatility: This feature effectively turns these two single-coil combinations into a humbucker-style circuit, offering players more tonal options with professional, low-noise performance.
